Bridging the Gender Health Gap: Understanding of the Female Body

For centuries, medical research and public health policies have predominantly focused on the male body, inadvertently sidelining the complexities of women’s health.

This long standing imbalance has perpetuated a significant gender health disparity, leaving critical women’s health issues—such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and cardiovascular disease—understudied and often misunderstood.

As these conditions manifest differently in women, the lack of awareness and tailored healthcare has resulted in alarming gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and overall care of women all around the globe.

To truly address this inequality and enhance gender-specific healthcare, it is important to elevate public understanding of the female body. Let’s understand why in this article.

Why Knowledge of the Female Body is Necessary

A woman’s body undergoes significant hormonal shifts throughout her life—during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. The first step to bridging the gender health disparity is to acknowledge and understand these physiological differences that shape women’s health.

These hormonal changes are more than just biological events; they are pivotal moments that influence everything from physical structure to emotional well-being.

For instance, the female body is uniquely designed for childbirth, a fact that brings with it distinct anatomical and physiological characteristics. The pelvis, for example, is broader and more circular in women, providing the necessary space for childbirth.

This structural difference contributes to a greater angle between the hip and knee (the Q-angle), which can affect how a woman’s body aligns and moves during physical activities, potentially leading to a higher risk of strain or injury if not properly understood and accommodated.

The biggest advantage of incorporating nuanced understanding into women’s healthcare allows for more personalised and effective treatment but also underscores the importance of respecting the unique experiences of women.

How Can We Close the Gender Health Gap?

To close the gender health disparity, one of the best ways is through education and awareness. By equipping both the public and healthcare professionals with a deeper understanding of female physiology we can better support women in leading healthy, fulfilling lives—thereby narrowing the gender gap in health outcomes.

This includes a concerted effort to integrate women’s health topics into school curriculums, medical training, and public health campaigns.

For example, there is a need to focus on joint stabilisation exercises in young women because joint instability and tissue laxity often increase during puberty. Similarly, during menstruation or menopause, a woman’s emotional and physical state can fluctuate rapidly, which might require adjustments in medical care or lifestyle practices by women to lead a normal and healthy life.

Understanding these differences is not about limiting what women can do, but about recognising that their paths to health may differ, requiring specialised knowledge and care.

Women’s Health Issues Need to be Destigmatised

The conversations around women’s health need to be destigmatised. Women’s health issues have often been shrouded in silence, leading to delayed diagnoses and inadequate treatment. This silence is compounded by the lack of necessary funding and research dedicated to female-specific health concerns, which has left significant gaps in our understanding and ability to address these issues effectively. This can only be done by fostering widespread education on women’s health and well- being, including commitment to direct funding and research, integrating women’s health into mainstream discourse so that government policies can start to address these disparities, and destigmatising conditions that have long been shrouded in silence.

By bridging the gap in understanding, we can bridge the gap in health disparities, dismantle the barriers that have historically hindered women’s access to quality care, and eventually creating a more just and equitable world for all where every woman has the opportunity to lead a healthy, empowered life, free from the shadows of medical neglect and inequality.
